I have recently found out that my grandfather was a platoon commander (stevedore officer) in the 442nd port company, 4th Marines ... which from what I can tell was definitely at Iwo Jima. He survived the conflict but passed away many years ago and did not speak to my father much about his experience.

So I'm trying to find out some information about his experience ... some questions I'm trying to answer are:

What did this company do at Iwo Jima?
Are there pictures out there of the company?
Are there any surviving Iwo Jima 442nd port company Marines that may have served with him?
What informational resources are there that could help me in my research?

PS I have what appears to be his bayonet, complete with leather sheath with "Iwo" imprinted in it ...
